Weekly Exercise

I commit to working out for 20-30 minutes, at least 3 times per week. Daily exercise doesn't really work for me. But every other day, or so, seems to work better and it is what's recommended as a minimum. So this would not include just regular hiking or daily walks, but something more strenuous, like lifting weights or getting some good cardio in.

I am in the process of rehabilitating a chunk of river bank on the lower Umpqua River that had been overgrown with a number of non-native invasive plant species. English Ivy, Himalayan Blackberry, Japanese Knotweed... the problem is that wildlife is not adapted to eating these plants and it is so thick that it is impenetrable. So as the non-native stuff moved in, the wildlife was almost completely eliminated from this area. So my Dad and I started working on it 5 years ago. It's an on-going project that started with gradually eradicating  the non-native species and replacing them native species. We've mostly eliminated the Japanese Knotweed. What's left is very weak. The population of blackberry and ivy has also been greatly reduced. I've been replacing the non-natives with the plants that grow there naturally... sword fern, rhododendron, Pacific ninebark, willow and myrtle trees. And I'm happy to report that we've started to see more wildlife activity in the area. Deer, a bear and cub, birds, otter, as well as insects that eat these plants (probably why the birds have returned). It's been very gratifying to see this area slowly returned to the creatures that belong there. Much more sustainable than the non-native invaders. :)

Love the sunny weather! Spent all day Saturday outside, doing garden cleanup. I didn't plant the herb garden yet, but I put a post in the garden for a bird feeder. I'll post a picture later this week. :)

Several of my daily challenges are really the same thing... spend at least 15 minutes away from screens to go for a daily walk outside, enjoying nature and practicing gratitude for the earth. It's kind of a win-win-win sort of deal. Plus it makes me happy.
