Create Your Own Action

Cool hands - warm heart

I will wash my hands with cool water to reduce dryness and do my part to reduce climate change. A 2013 study found that hot water does not reduce the amount of bacteria on hands. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ijcs.12012/full

I think I’ve finally gotten into the habit of washing my hands in cool water rather than turning on the hot spigot.  Also for the year I’m about to see my bike odometer hit 900 miles. Now that feels good!

I took a long walk here in Austin, Texas and soaked in how different the vegetation is from Pennsylvania. The Colorado River runs straight through the town and I saw this magical sculpture created from bicycles. Great homage to cycling!

Attending a conference and amazed at how much disposable
Plastics are used by hotels and conference centers. Carrying around my own water bottle and travel mug keeps the waste down.

There are so many opportunities to change the unsustainable “norms” built into our culture! I also carry my (2j water bottles with me in my backpack wherever I go.

Last week, when eating out, the waitress brought water to the table in tall glasses, all with a plastic straw. Having just seen the statistic that 90% of all the plastics we consume are only used once, I've begun noticing how often this is true. So, even though there is no EcoChallenge action specific to straws, I will start specifically asking not to have straws when at restaurants.

This is very true! Little actions like that can make a difference.

Thanks for this post.  I remember hearing years ago that a large percentage of paper is only used once as well so we should think twice before deciding to hit that print button.

Hey team members. We are still in 3rd place and we now have 134 members. That is 134 people who are ready to make a change in October. Let's keep up the recruiting to make our 600 member goal.
