If you have a low water use toilet, you shouldn't do this because there won't be enough force to flush.  This is fine for the regular water use toilets, but does not work well with low water use toilets.  Just thought I'd chime in.

I spoke to the coordinator of the food distribution program and learned that food cannot leave the distribution site except via individuals receiving the donations, or via the dumpster.  They are not allowed to divert anything to any other agency.  I volunteered to help out if there was a need to repackage or sort items so that items were ready and available for distribution, and did not end up getting missed and ending up destined for the landfill.  I will probably be helping out on distribution days.  Whatever it takes to get the food to people and not to a dumpster.

A great documentary to watch is The Minimalists.  2 guys talk about how they arrived at minimalism, and how it affects their lives, their friends, and the earth. - Hint:  it's good for the earth!  It's available at the library.

I've been looking forward to this Saturday.  I am going to see the director of the food distribution program and I am going to ask him about diverting excess food to soup kitchens/churches before it becomes waste.  I'm not sure how he will react.  I already approached him about diverting some of the rotting food from the dumpster to some friends; compost piles.  That much less goes to the landfill.  Now, I'm going to try to see if I can head off some of the excess produce before it ends up in the dumpster.  Make it get to some people in need.  I've also heard from my friends who pick up the food for their compost pile, that aprons and other useful new items also end up in the dumpster.  I know the man is doing all of the singlehandedly, but maybe I can help him think outside the dumpster for some of these things.  Wish me luck.

Originally, I incorrectly signed up for challenges on items that I was already doing.  I made that correction just now.  I compost, recycle, reuse, reduce, re-everything!  Even though there is insufficient recycling at my apartment complex - I take my recycling to where it can be recycled.  There are a few things to work on, and I haven't made contact yet with my contact at the Food Distribution site to see how we can work together to reduce the amount of food (and other things) that he is sending to the landfill.  I found out about this because I set a friend of mine up with him to pick up "rotting produce" to take home to his compost bin.  My friend can pick up several pickup truckloads a week, and there is still food going to the landfill.  He has also thrown out other items that still have life in them.  I am hoping to meet with him soon and see how we can make a change that won't inconvenience him.

I am very environmentally aware, but I live in an apartment complex with only 2 blue bins for 35 apartments.  I have to drive my recycling all over the place to make sure it gets recycled.  And I do.  My design my own challenge is going to be attempting to reduce the waste at a commodities/Feeding San Diego food distribution center.  Some is being picked up to be turned into compost, but an awful lot of food and other stuff is being toted off to the landfill.  I hope to be able to work with the coordinator and see if some of this food can be diverted to soup kitchens or churches before it goes bad, and when he realizes he is not going to distribute all of it.  It will probably be a challenge, but it's worth trying.
