Create Your Own Action
BYO Sleeve
Coffee happens. It just does. And sometimes it’s gotta go mobile. Since I’m on the road and its sometimes a challenge to have a mug handy, I like to save sleeves from the various coffee shops for reuse. The BYO-Sleeve method. It’s also, coincidently, weird enough of a thing to do that your barristas start to know you and your order REALLY fast (albeit due to the fact you’re the weirdo with the crusty sleeve)...
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Exercise Daily
I will exercise daily for 30 minute(s) per day for two weeks.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Use Reusable Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Energy
Disable Screen Savers
I will disable screen savers and will put the computer to sleep instead, saving up to 28% more energy.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support Northwest Earth Institute or another local nonprofit.
Community
Sign a Petition
I will sign a petition in support of an environmental or social initiative in my state.
Food
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about food with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will learn about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Community
Connect with a Nonprofit
I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Community
Share My Actions
I will make my environmental actions visible with a lawn sign or bumper sticker, or by posting to my social media networks.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Matt Edlen 10/24/2017 7:02 PMExplaining why you refused a sleeve while also pulling a sleeve out of your bag from another shop was second only to telling the guy I was meeting with about the 2017 eco challenge. One more day - FTW!!! -

Matt Edlen 10/22/2017 7:14 AMSaturday -Caturday was no walk in the park for this eco-challenger. Up early with a T-ride to the Head Of the Charles to watch a dear friend row in the grand masters division. Follow that up with a nice hike along the Charles from Harvard to Allston on a new path less traveled. We were reusing bottles, we were walkin, we were public transiting ... wonderful day! -
Matt Edlen 10/21/2017 5:46 AMAnother one in the books! -
Matt Edlen 10/19/2017 12:15 PMIt’s incredible how impactful our bodies of water are. From health, transportation, commerce, etc. our rivers, harbors, oceans play a MASSIVE impact and yet we treat them like garbage. Took time between meetings to follow the links to both the OR and MA EPA sites and good lord was it tough... and these are the progressive places!!! -
