    Had a lot of fun this time around.  My hike was rainy but fun, already planning to return to do more.  Learned a lot about fish and issues with the depletions.  got some great new recipes to use.  (A few not so great...)  The happiness challenge made me happy!  :-)

    I'm not too sure why, but this year has been so much fun - I'm going to be sad to finish.  I'm thinking I will try to incorporate some of my challenges into a weekly or monthly challenge.  Should be fun.

    Here's a bit of trivia I found on the seafoodwatch.org  web site.. .International fisheries management agencies report that one-fifth of the world's catch is illegal, unreported or unregulated, which is a slight drop from prior years.  to help avoid purchasing possible illegally caught fish you can: Look for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue ecolabel in stores and restaurants. These products are certified sustainable to the standards of the MSC and can be traced back to the certified fishery.

    I was reading through the recipes on the Seafood Watch site last night looking for new ideas and was very sad to see a recipe for Halibut.  It seems counter to what is on their Avoid List.  Why put a recipe for a fish they encourage folks not to eat because it is being over fished?  :-/

      Yup, you really need to do some research and understand where the fish are coming from.  It's been a real eye opener for me.

      How odd!

      Maybe it helps if you buy halibut from a fishery that is managed more sustainably? I took a look at the Environmental Defense Fund's ratings. http://seafood.edf.org/halibut

      They imply that halibut is overfished in the Atlantic and intensely fished in Greenland and California, but that Alaskan and Canadian fisheries are a better choice. If you are concerned about mercury, Alaska and Canada are also the better choice, although halibut seems to be one of those deep water fish it's better to limited consumption of.

      Also, I wonder if you could substitute another firm fish in that recipe with good results. Maybe black sea bass? http://seafood.edf.org/sea-bass

    Put together a vegie stew for the crockpot this morning.  Hoping it won't too mushy by this evening... LOL

      The stew was great, the vegies were perfect. Put together a leek and sweet potato soup this week end.  That turned out surprisingly good as well.  Added a bit of sour cream and smoked cheddar - yummy.

    Well, I've found my new hiking trail to explore.  It's not quite in my area, but I do pass it quite frequently on my way to the coast.  It's the Footbridge Trailhead off of Highway 6.  My family and I have been driving past it for years and so many times discussed stopping to explore.  The Eco Challenge seemed like a good reason to finally try the trail out.

      I did my Footbridge Trail hike this weekend in between the raindrops.  The trail is absolutely beautiful, the leaves are already changing so the colors were great.  It follows the river and up through some very pretty area.  Not too difficult.  My beast boy managed to hurt his leg so I wasn't able to go as far as I wanted, but it was still a good hike.  Just in case you're wondering... he's doing better, just a very sore leg.

      You'll have to tell us how it is! I live near Cooper Mountain and on Monday, hiked new trails there that I haven't tried before. I really enjoyed adding the Larkspur Loop to my usual route this time. http://www.thprd.org/parks-and-trails/detail/cooper-mountain-nature-park
