I saw Chasing Coral a few weeks ago, being a Marine Scientist I knew much of the information, but there is still something so shocking about seeing what we are doing to our planet. I had a business trip in Chicago this week, I made some personal time and walked to the Aquarium there. What a magical place, everywhere you turned there was educational information about curbing single use plastic consumption. It was amazing! We need to really get up in people's faces about how detrimental Single Use plastics are to our environment. It's insane how much trash we produce on a daily basis as a society.

I make it point to post at least one educational and empowering post on Social Media on how people can curb their single use plastic consumption. I think when people see images that impact their communities and the places they love directly they are more likely to act.

I reached out to the Vermont Environmental Commissioners, expressing my support for a Plastic Bag Ban. I then reached out to the Surfrider Foundation so that we could work together to build a plan that works for Vermont. I hope to have an action plan to the Commissions for them to vote on in January 2018.

I am grateful for the opportunity to travel, wether for work of pleasure or research, 2017 has brought me to many new places I am grateful to have explored. One of the main takeaways from my personal/research travel has been how many plastics I found on foreign shores. From micro plastics to single use items such as bottles, every shoreline I visited this year was littered with single use plastic items. It was sobering, sad and empowering all at the same time.

Moving really lets you evaluate just how much stuff one accumulates and seldom uses! A long distance move this summer really opened my eyes to how many things we had purchased that we now had to get rid of, things that added to happiness factors into my life or made our planet a better place. Since our move two months ago, we've made it a point to really give careful consideration to any purchases (large or small) and we have a 24-48 hour cool down period on most purchases, so we can clearly think about what we need and if we truly need it, as opposed to falling for an impulse buy.

In reality this one goes to my husband, despite being an avid environmentalist I had no idea how many toxic chemicals I was using in our day to day lives. This year, I made it a point to only purchase plant based cleaners and products I have not qualms about letting flow down our drains. It's incredible how little information is openly available to our society about how damaging most chemicals found in the average home can be!

I've always been pretty goof about wellness visits and knowing my numbers, this year was exceptionally busy and it wasn't until I started having some odd health issues that I realized I hadn't made time to evaluate my health. I've since made some changes thanks to my wonderful team of nurses and health care practitioners and this was a great reminder to not neglect self care.

To say that most of my life I have been addicted to refined Sugars is an understatement! It is scary how much excess sugar we consume as a society, having a sweet tooth doesn't help at all! But, thanks to Pinterest and actually reading what some of my health heroes like Kelly Slater put into their bodies has helped me a ton. Living in Vermont it's easy to find natural, local Maple syrup which makes my morning coffee taste amazing, I also now frequently swap it out with Coconut Nectar! If you love Coconuts you will love Coconut Nectar!
